On a recent long-haul flight, I got a seat in economy class due to a full flight. This is no surprise, flights between HKG and LAX are always packed.
56A, which means I have to bother two other people every time i need to use the bathroom. I prefer an aisle seat but i guess i have no choice this time. Let's hope they are frequent bathroom visitors as well.
I dozed off a few times after watching some movie. The flight remaining time shown on the screen barely changed everytime i woke up. "8 hours left." "7.5 hours left" I thought of an older gentleman who once asked me after the first meal service, "How many more hours do we have until we get to Hong Kong?" I smiled and said, " many many more hours" He then told me the only experience he could think of that is worse than getting through a long haul flight is to be buried alive" I thought the man was joking, he might actually be right about this. I continued to rotate between sleep and movies until i woke up to this incredible scene in front of my eyes - a sea of stars.
"What ARE these?!" "They look just like stars, only they appear in the ocean and come in large quantity." I tried to make sense out of what I was seeing. "It's 3 hours before we land in HKG, we are probably somewhere above Japan around this time." My face was against the window, my eyes wide open. I was like a kid for the first time in her life seeing something that she had never even heard of before.
This is simply AMAZING.
My curiosity was running wild, a million questions popped in my mind. "Are they boats?" "They've got to be." " How can i still see those lights so well?" There's only one light on each boat? Maybe they are just scattered lights from some rural area? There were just too many of them. As the aircraft continued to move southbound, more boats kept coming up. I couldn't stop capturing their images on my phone, one after another, just like my mind wouldn't stop wondering.
That wondrous night converted me, now I always choose a window seat if i could. There are just so many amazing things awaiting your discovery, whether they are beautiful colors of sunsets, magnificent glaciers of Alaska, patches of green in different shades, or views that you don't even know their existence.
Pick a window seat next time you fly. Your neighbors can be bothered if they have to be. Trust me. You don't want to miss out on the best part of the inflight entertainment - the unique perspective on the world wonders. They can keep you occupied for hours and make you forget about your lower back pain for a while.
